How to Export ChatGPT Conversations (PDF, MD, JSON, TXT)

4 min readExportUpdated June 11, 2026

Quick Answer

ChatGPT can export your data natively via Settings → Data controls → Export data, but it sends your entire account history as a zip file — you can't export one conversation, and there's no PDF or Markdown option. For single-chat exports in PDF, Markdown, JSON or TXT, use an extension like AI Workspace Pro.

You finished a long ChatGPT session and want to send the result to a client, archive it in your notes, or keep a copy outside OpenAI's servers. Copy-pasting a 100-message thread into a document mangles formatting and takes forever — and ChatGPT's share link only works while the chat (and your account) exists.

There are two genuinely useful export paths, and they solve different problems. Here's when to use each.

What you can do without an extension

ChatGPT has a real export feature, and for full backups it's the right tool: go to Settings → Data controls → Export data. OpenAI emails you a link to a zip containing your entire conversation history as HTML and JSON.

Its limits matter, though:

  • It's all-or-nothing — the whole account, never a single conversation.
  • No PDF, Markdown or plain-text option, so the output needs reworking before you can share it.
  • You wait for an email, and the download link expires after 24 hours.

Use it for periodic full backups. For "export this one chat as a PDF right now", you need a different tool.

1Install AI Workspace Pro

Add AI Workspace Pro on Chrome, Edge or Firefox. Export is built into the extension alongside its organization and navigation features, and everything runs locally in your browser — conversations aren't routed through any third-party server on the way to your disk.

2Open the conversation and pick a format

From any conversation, choose Export and pick the format that fits the destination:

  • PDF — for clients and anyone who just needs to read it.
  • Markdown — for Notion, Obsidian, GitHub or your own docs; formatting and code blocks survive intact.
  • TXT — for maximum portability.
  • JSON — for scripts, pipelines or structured archives.

3Export images separately with the Image Gallery

Conversations aren't the only thing worth saving. The Image Gallery collects every image across your conversations — both your uploads and DALL-E generations, with their original prompts — and bulk download saves them all at once with prompt text files included. If you generate images regularly, this rescues work you'd otherwise lose to the scroll. Make it routine: export important chats when they conclude, and run a native full-account backup monthly. For chats you'd rather erase than archive, see the conversation cleanup guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I export a single ChatGPT conversation natively?

No. ChatGPT's built-in export (Settings → Data controls → Export data) always covers your whole account and arrives by email as a zip of HTML and JSON. Single-conversation export in formats like PDF or Markdown requires an extension.

Can I export a ChatGPT conversation as a PDF?

Not with ChatGPT alone — printing the page to PDF is the closest native workaround and handles long chats poorly. AI Workspace Pro exports any individual conversation to PDF directly, alongside Markdown, TXT and JSON options.

Which export format should I choose?

PDF for sharing with non-technical readers, Markdown for notes apps and docs since formatting survives, JSON for programmatic processing, TXT for universal compatibility. When unsure, Markdown is the most reusable choice.

Does exporting send my conversation to a third-party server?

Not with AI Workspace Pro. The extension is local-first with zero telemetry: exports are generated in your browser and saved straight to your computer. No conversation content is transmitted anywhere.
