How to Write Better ChatGPT Prompts (Optimize Any Draft)
Quick Answer
A strong ChatGPT prompt names a role, gives context, states the format you want, and adds a constraint or two. You can apply that by hand, or click Optimize in the AI Workspace Pro composer to rewrite any draft into a clearer, more specific prompt — then compare original vs optimized side by side and use the better one.
Most prompts are one short line: "write a blog post about productivity". ChatGPT answers exactly what you asked — generic in, generic out. The gap between a mediocre answer and a great one is almost never the model; it's how much the prompt actually told it to do.
There are two ways to close that gap: learn the pattern and apply it yourself, or let the Prompt Optimizer apply it for you. Here's both.
What you can do without an extension
A strong prompt usually has four parts. Add them by hand and most prompts improve immediately:
- Role. Tell ChatGPT who to be: "Act as a senior copywriter." It sets vocabulary, depth and tone.
- Context. Who's it for and why? "for remote knowledge workers struggling with afternoon focus."
- Format. Say what you want back: length, structure, sections, bullet points, a table.
- Constraints. Add the guardrails: tone, things to avoid, a word count, examples to include.
Doing this every time is the catch — it's real work, so in practice most prompts stay short. That's exactly the friction the Prompt Optimizer removes.
1Install AI Workspace Pro
Add AI Workspace Pro on Chrome, Edge or Firefox. It holds a 4.5★ Chrome Web Store rating. Open chatgpt.com and you'll see an Optimize button on the composer.
2Type a rough draft and click Optimize
Don't overthink the first version — that's the point. Type your prompt the lazy way ("write a blog post about productivity") and click Optimize. Your draft opens in the optimizer, ready to improve.
3Compare original vs optimized, then use it
The optimizer shows your original next to an AI-rewritten version that adds the role, context, format and constraints for you. Re-optimize for a different angle if you like, then click Use this version to drop it into the composer. If your prompt was already sharp, it tells you so instead of changing it — and that doesn't count against your weekly limit. Full details on the Prompt Optimizer feature page.
4Save the winners to your Prompt Library
When an optimized prompt works well, save it so you never rewrite it again. The optimizer preserves {{variables}}, so you can turn a great one-off into a reusable template. See how to save prompts in ChatGPT for the workflow.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Prompt Optimizer free?
AI Workspace ships a free, on-device quick-optimize for light touch-ups. The full Prompt Optimizer — a stronger AI model, side-by-side comparison and re-optimize — is a Pro feature with a generous weekly fair-use limit. 'Already clear' results never count against that limit.
Will it keep my variables and placeholders?
Yes. {{variables}}, [placeholders] and code blocks are preserved exactly, so optimized prompts still work as reusable Prompt Library templates.
Does optimizing change my answer's language?
No. Write in any language and the optimized prompt comes back in the same language, ready to send.
What's the fastest way to improve a prompt without the tool?
Add a role and a format. 'Act as a [role]. Give me [format: a 5-step list / a table / 200 words].' Those two additions alone fix most vague prompts — the optimizer just does it (plus context and constraints) automatically.
